Magnetic Contact Mounting Rules
The opening contact consists of a magnet that creates the magnetic field and a contact whose state is modified by the presence of this field.
In air or on neutral materials (wood, aluminum, plaster, etc.), the magnetic field is distributed evenly around the magnet.
Near ferromagnetic materials (steel, soft iron), the magnet's magnetic field is entirely attracted and captured by this material and no longer acts in other directions.
Consequently, it is essential to keep the magnets and contacts sufficiently far from magnetic supports using specific spacers. To check whether a material is ferromagnetic or not, use the magnet on the contact. If there is attraction between the magnet and the material, the latter is ferromagnetic.
Operating Principle of a NO (Normally Open) Magnetic Opening Detector
Opening detectors are used on exits or access points to be protected.
Each detector consists of two parts: a contact installed on the door frame and a magnet on the moving part.
When the magnet is moved away from the sensor, the contact is open. The control panel does not receive any information about the opening of a door or window; if the security system is armed, the alarm is not triggered.
When the magnet approaches the contact, the two blades of the ILS are subjected to the magnetic field. Each blade then behaves like a magnet. The flexible blade deforms and comes into contact with the rigid blade. Electrical contact is established; the control panel receives a closure as information. In this case, the alarm will be triggered.
These contacts must be connected in parallel to a normally open zone of your control panel or system. The disadvantage is that a cable cut will not trigger an alarm. The advantage: No alarm control panel is required. NO opening detectors are very popular with DIY enthusiasts.
There are two types of opening detectors (NC and NO):
- NC magnetic opening detector (normally closed contact = no alarm, open contact in alarm)
- NO magnetic opening detector (normally open contact = no alarm, closed contact in alarm)
If you wish to order one or more NC magnetic opening detectors, please visit our website (ref. SC10N).
The SC10N opening detector is not suitable for directly powering a 12V or 220V siren. However, the opening detector (ref. 3920) can be used with a small 12V siren and a switch.
