Permanent or starting capacitors: Their functions
Permanent or starting capacitors are not suppressors, their function is to help start or rotate the electric motors that are equipped with them. The value in MF (microfarad µF) is very important and will therefore guide your choice. The voltage indicated (example 450V) is the maximum voltage that the capacitor can support and not a service voltage.
Symptoms of failure: The motor struggles to start or does not start at all. It starts slowly when it is powered and started manually
Technology:
On washing machine motors, we find this type of capacitors on squirrel cage motors with a permanent magnet rotor. Like brushed motors (the magnetic field of the rotor is produced by the electricity that powers the motor). Advantage: They do not require any maintenance.
The capacitor creates a 90° phase shift between the two main windings, it is a bit like adding another additional electrical source on the second winding.
The phase shift improves the torque at start-up and allows the motor to have rotational stability.
