FFP1 masks are mainly used as a dust mask (very effective for DIY or various jobs). They allow at least 70% aerosol filtration and a maximum of 22% inward leakage.

Class FFP1 respiratory protection masks are suitable for work environments in which no aerosol or fibrogenic or toxic dust is present. They filter at least 80% of particles in the air up to a size of 0.6 μm, and can be used as long as the concentration of the pollutant does not exceed four times the maximum exposure value. Class FFP1 masks generally provide sufficient respiratory protection in the building or food industry.

Since standard EN149 - 2009, the acronyms NR or R are added after FFP1, FFP2, FFP3:

- NR (if the use of the mask is limited to one day)

- R (for reuse more than once).
